2026 Global Climate Geodesign Competition Finalists

The inaugural Global Climate Geodesign Competition (GCGC) pilot held its award ceremony on 15 July 2026 at the Esri User Conference in San Diego.


Submissions were invited across open categories, such as cities and regions; countries and bio-regions; unions and groups of countries; and/or coastal and marine areas, maritime regions, Exclusive Economic Zones and the High Seas. The qualitative criteria are functionality, resilience and amenity; and entries were also judged on their quantified impact.


The international Jury comprised oceanographer Professor Dawn Wright (Esri Chief Scientist); forest expert Professor Emeritus William Moomaw (Distinguished Visiting Scientist, Woodwell Climate Research Center); founder of the Ecological Transition Workshop Dr. Panos Mantziaras (Director of the Braillard Foundation); hydrologist Professor Carmen de Jong (University of Strasbourg); and renewable energy autonomy expert Professor Dieter Genske (University of Nordhausen).

Prof. Peter Droege and LISD are currently at the Esri User Conference UC2026 in San Diego, the world’s largest event on Geographic Information Systems, presenting the LISD Climate Planning Method:


On July 11 at 2:30 p.m. local time, he will speak at the Education Summit


On July 14 at 4:00 p.m., he will speak at the “GIS for Good” Demo Theater


On July 15 at 9:00 a.m., he will speak at the Map Gallery—and host the awards ceremony for the Global Climate Geodesign Competition (GCGC), which he/LISD launched last year, in collaboration with the International Geodesign Collaboration IGC, the University of Minnesota UMN, and Esri.


• The Map Gallery also hosts a large special exhibit on the LISD method throughout UC Week.
• At the Expo, LISD and UMN are presenting a display in the GIS for Good section all week long.

Invitation to educational institutions around the world to submit GIS-based climate mitigation designs through local and regional climate-positive scenario modeling. The initiative commenced in early September. LISD in association with the International Geodesign Collaboration, the University of Minnesota and Esri.
